Iconic Hotel of the Month: Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet. Turkey

Each month I select one iconic hotel in the world and explain why it deserves to be on the list:

Nestled in the heart of Istanbul, adjacent to the iconic Hagia Sophia, stands the Four Seasons Hotel Sultanahmet. Once a foreboding Ottoman-era prison, this architectural gem has undergone a remarkable renovation, seamlessly blending its tumultuous past with present-day elegance.

The hotel's interior spaces have been reimagined into luxurious havens, preserving the essence of its historical narrative, while embracing modern sophistication. Collaborating with preservation experts, the designers Goddard Littlefair ensured that every architectural detail retained its significance, resulting in a seamless fusion of Ottoman-era charm and Four Seasons luxury.

Former prison cells have been transformed into sumptuous suites, each exuding its unique design paying homage to the building's storied past. Inspired by Istanbul's rich cultural tapestry, the interior design narrates a visual story of the city's evolution, adding depth and character to every corner.

The renovation also breathed new life into the hotel's courtyard, once a confined prison yard, now a tranquil oasis. Surrounded by lush greenery and complemented by a light and airy restaurant, the courtyard invites guests to unwind, offering a stark contrast to the bustling energy of Istanbul.

More than just a luxury accommodation, the hotel embodies the city's resilience and capacity for reinvention. From its days of confinement to its current status as a pinnacle of elegance, the hotel stands as a testament to Istanbul's enduring spirit, where history seamlessly intertwines with modernity. Personalized touches, such as guided tours by the hotels official “storyteller” offering detailed insights into the hotel's history, enhance the guest experience, ensuring an authentic and memorable stay. Check out the small ‘museum’ where you can admire curated Ottoman artifacts and jewelry, and,  they are actually for sale.
